Reading graphs is critical in a democracy. It is important for understanding the variety of graphical representations and statistical data that are provided when one is choosing how to vote and who to vote for. It is one of the fundamental literacies for being an educated citizen. Did you ever wonder what preservice teachers considered when looking at graphs? How might they translate these to their students, what did they attend to? Did science preservice teachers read graphs differently than mathematics preservice teachers? What graphs were most troublesome for them? How can we help teachers with graphical literacies given these ways of conceiving graphically? Interviews of preservice teachers will be used to explore what conceptions and how we might teach teachers to provide graphical literacies to their students. CCSSM (Common Core State Standards in Mathematics) provides for grade-level graphical representation- how might we use these and teach graphical and statistical literacies for understanding?
